This week flashed before my eyes! I looked at the calendar and realized we only have 8 school days before the holiday break! One big reason my week went by so fast was because I was away from the classroom while students enjoyed time with a guest teacher. On Wednesday I attended a PBIS meeting. This is something you will be hearing a lot more about in the future! I am on a team that will be working to implement a new behavior system at Pence. It is based off of giving students a lot of positive reinforcements. Then on Thursday the first grade team (Pence, Washington and Libertyville) and myself met in order to get assessments for this quarter and next quarter organized.
Since the students did a fantastic job for our guest teacher the past days, we have a fun filled day today! In the morning we started out learning about “La Bafana” who is a witch from Italy, and takes goodies to kids (like our Santa Clause) on January 5th (http://storytellingcraftsandkids.blogspot.com/2010/01/legend-of-la-befana.html) and will also sweep the child’s room.
After learning about La Bafana the students learned about President Barack Obama, One of this quarters standards is to be able to identify who our current president is. We read about, listen too, and wrote to the president! Students began writing letters to Barack Obama asking him questions concerning his likes and interests. Next time you are with your child this would be a good question to spring on him/her.
Later in the day we listened to the story “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” and watched the original movie. (Some of the students did not know what this contraption was). During our write-to-self time students compared how the Grinch felt at the beginning and the end of the story.
Next week is going to be a very busy week for our school. We will be giving out two important tests! One is the BRI (Basic Reading Inventory) where the students will read a passage so we can assess their reading growth. We will also be taking the DMI (District Math Inventory). The DMI will be given on Monday, and the BRI will be administered on Friday.
Math: We are learning about using a ruler and how to measure different items. For extra support give your student a ruler, remind them how to use it, and have them measure different items around the house. Help show them how important measuring is by having them help you measure different things. For example, if you are making a wood structure using a tape measure, let them read you the total inches. If you are crafting, have them help with measure out different shapes.
Reading: KEEP READING! The more our students read, the more they will know. I also haven't been receiving back reading logs. Please sent them back with your student once you have them filled out. After Christmas, it will be assigned to your student that they have to read to you.
Social Studies: We are still learning about communities and citizenship for this quarter.
With the snow coming more and more, please be sure to send your student with the proper gear to go out into the snow. Students will not be able to play in the snow without snow pants and boots.
